The 2016 REX HILL Sunny Mountain Vineyard Pinot Noir opens with dark fruit aromas, blackberry, dark cherry, ripe blueberry, and reserved fruit overtones like prunes, olives, pomegranate and kumquats. An earthy undercurrent of mineral and savory notes, bay leaf, tarragon, loamy soil, and iron, round out the complexity of the nose. The palate is dense, structured and contemplative. Oak is present but integrated, pointing to a great longevity for aging potential and giving the palate a rich and velvety mouthfeel, while playing up the acidity and tannin. Well-structured, with a long finish.
